FAO

The Global Food Security Challenge within the Emerging New World Order

Our third committee is FAO, which is a beginner-level committee! One‍‌‍‍‌ of the major outcomes of the second World War was the United Nation's decision to lay the foundation for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO was set to change the food-agriculture system to the global level. The main mission of the FAO is to elevate the food supply, cultivate rural economies, increase the resilience, and guide countries in the use of sustainable food policies. In addition to that, the organization helps in fronting the right to adequate nutritive food through support, research, and coordination with other countries. The first decade after the new millennium is marked by changes in the global power structure and a competition over indispensable resources that is getting more and more intense. Food security has become one of the biggest challenges facing the world due to the rise of geopolitical tensions and the rapidly changing climate. The world's food systems have been heavily influenced by population growth, extreme weather events, supply chain disruptions, and the unequal access to agricultural technologies. These factors have severely affected food systems in the regions that were already facing food insecurity, where agricultural productivity has fallen, and market volatility has risen. The COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and climate-related disasters happening back to back have made the global food systems less dependable than ever before. The Committee will examine such barriers to global food governance in their reaction on how state governments can weigh their national interests against their international obligations. This conversation will also refer to the role of big powers, international organizations and global trade structures in ensuring food security, and to what extent frontier crises and the geopolitical shifts necessitate a new understanding of the global community's ‍‌‍‍‌responsibilities.
